Queima do Judas 2025

Queima do Judas is based on an artistic creation process grounded in research, training, and experimentation (in dramaturgy, choreography, music, visual arts, and scenography), with the aim of presenting to the public a range of activities including urban interventions, training sessions, conferences, and a multidisciplinary street performance.

Queima do Judas is an annual event held on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. It is a popular tradition, thought to have originated as a symbolic punishment for Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus of Nazareth in exchange for thirty pieces of silver. The coincidence of this celebration with the arrival of spring led, over time, to an overlap of customs, with the burning of hateful figures symbolising, in a pagan sense, the end of winter - the dark, bleak season associated with the "evils" of society, cold, and poverty.

The Queima do Judas project in Vila do Conde aims to bring together a wide range of entities and individuals at local, regional, and national levels to realise a multicultural event that revives this tradition. It is a multidisciplinary artistic event that has been gaining increasing prominence in recent years, involving hundreds of people from Vila do Conde’s artistic and community sectors in its production and creation. In this unique moment of celebrating both the sacred and the profane - with humour, irony, and satire - diverse artistic fields converge, including theatre, circus, dance, visual arts, music, video imagery, and photography.

Since 2005, Nuvem Voadora Cultural Association has organised Queima do Judas annually, with the participation of numerous organisations and collaborators, under the distinguished patronage of the Municipality of Vila do Conde.
